This map of Afognak Island is the first where the time on research exceeded the time on design. Mapping land ownership is a moving target but Afognak Island was especially difficult. Many of the smaller islands had different names depending on the source. Data was woefully out of date and had to be corrected & classified manually.

The request to make this map was the most flattering I have recieved. The superintendent of Alaska State Parks in Kodiak had seen my Game Management Unit 8 map and asked if I could make something like it for Afognak Island specifically. I spoke with the Kodiak ADF&G staff and they agreed that Afognak brings the most questions from hunters and has the fewest resources.

Like most of my maps, the shape of it began with a single idea: I want to break the neatline. I wanted a piece of my map to extend beyond the boundaries of the map frame. Astute observers would note that I could get rid of the neatline break and just extend the frame to the top. To them I say, "I think it looks good and that is a valid reason for the decision."
